SUNTREE — As we look forward to a fall season of returning events this year, Advent Lutheran Church is ready to present the first of its pipe organ concerts this weekend.

Nationally celebrated organist Dr. Samuel Backman will kick off the concert season at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 7550 N. Wickham Road, Melbourne. The concert is free to attend.

“Dr. Backman was recommended to me several years ago by two of our award-winning performers,” said Betty Jo Couch, choir director and organist for Advent Lutheran Church.

“I listened to several recordings of his performances online and immediately contacted him,” she continued. “I realized right away that not only is he exceptionally talented, but he knows how to put together a program that will appeal to an audience with widely diverse musical tastes.”

Ms. Couch said she is excited for his opening of Edward Elgar's “Imperial March,” his inclusion of the world-famous Widor “Toccata” from Symphony No. 5, and his own arrangements of Vaughan Williams' “English Folk Song Suite” originally composed for brass band, and Sousa's “The Washington Post.”

Dr. Backman will perform on the church’s A.E. Schlueter organ of 2,196 pipes. He hails from Minneapolis, Minnesota where he serves as director of Sacred Music at Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Audiences may have heard Dr. Backman when he was featured on “Pipedreams,” a National Public Radio broadcast program. He has also performed as an organ recitalist for conferences hosted by the American Guild of Organists and the Church Music Association of America.

“I believe Advent's organ concert series is so popular because of a combination of the instrument and the performers,” Ms. Couch said. “For the last 10 years, organists of all ages, from around the world, have displayed their distinct musical personalities, virtuosity, and passion for the organ on the 36-rank organ that was designed specifically for the beautiful sanctuary.”

Throughout the years, Ms. Couch said she has seen every performer bring their own depth of talent and musicality to showcase the unique tonal qualities of the A.E. Schlueter pipe organ.

This upcoming concert season will feature James Kealy on Oct. 30 for its “Rising Star” program, and in December there will be a weekly series of mini concerts, followed by Weston Jennings on Feb. 12 and Josiah Armes on May 7.

“The organ is designed to provide an orchestral array of instrumental sounds in one instrument,” Ms. Couch said. “I enjoy hearing these sounds utilized in the vast array of repertoire available for worship as well as performance.

“To experience the hushed, meditative mood of the soft strings in one instance, then to be immediately transported with the entrance of the festival trumpet and virtuosic pedal work, is something I never tire of,” she said.
